COMPRESSION STOCKING

What are compression stockings, and how can it help me?

 

Compression stocking is for you if you are in any of the following situations:

  • Currently pregnant

  • About to go on long-distance flight travel (or frequently travels long-distance)

  • Age over 40

  • Family history of venous circulation problems

  • Feels discomfort or tired in your legs

  •  Have swollen ankles and/or calves

  • Works at a job that is either primarily sitting or primarily standing

  • Recently had surgery

Compression stocking is a medical device used to improve the health of your venous circulation in your legs.  Venous circulation problems usually develop over time – use compression stockings to prevent these problems or to keep them from becoming worse.

Inside your veins, valves open and close to help blood flow in one direction, even from the legs back to the heart. Venous circulation problems occur when valves don’t work properly, and blood flows backwards.  This backflow can cause many complications, including:

  • Swelling – blood pools in the lower leg

  • Enlarged veins

  • Blood clots

  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)

  • Varicose Veins

  • Venous Ulcers

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis

How to compression stockings work?

Compression stockings are specifically constructed to apply gradient compression at measured intervals.  The highest amount of pressure is applied at the ankle, and gradually decreases up the length of the stocking.  This helps blood return to the heart.

Can I buy compression stockings on my own from my local drug store?

Compression stockings that are available off the shelf are considered less than medical-grade, and is only suitable for certain populations of people.  If you have a confirmed venous disorder, or you have symptoms listed above, you require medical-grade compression stocking that is specifically ordered just for you.

Will my insurance company cover the costs of my compression stockings?

Most insurance companies recognize the benefits of compression stockings, and have a special category just for them.  Depending on your insurance plan, you may have coverage for up to 4 pairs of compression stockings per year.  It is best to call your insurance company to ask for details on your coverage from your insurance plan.
